I-5 SOUTHBOUND IS CLOSED UNTIL EARLY OCTOBER

24 hours, 7 days a week for up to 5 weeks

Plan ahead. Significant delays and unpredictable travel times are expected.

  • Travel times may take two to three times longer than usual.
  • Congestion could back up across the Columbia River into Washington and onto local streets in the Portland area.
  • If you need additional resources to help you get around during major closures or to communicate information with your network, visit our Closure Travel Resources or I-5 Closures Toolkit pages.

Drivers can expect

Drivers can expect:

  • I-5 southbound is closed between I-405 and I-84
  • This closure is all hours of the day from September 11 to early October
  • One lane is maintained from the split with I-405 to the Broadway/Weidler off-ramp to provide access to the Rose Quarter events district, the Moda Center and the Oregon Convention Center
  • I-5 northbound remains open at all times
  • I-5 southbound is expected to be completely closed starting at about 10 p.m. on Friday, September 11. However, there may be I-5 ramps that could start to close an hour earlier at 9 p.m. Travelers are encouraged to allow extra time to get where you need to go and consult navigation tools to plan your route.
  • The highway will reopen as soon as the work is complete.

How will staged tows work during the closure?

  • Vehicles involved in an incident or stalled within the project boundaries do not have the preference of selecting a tow service provider. These vehicles will be towed by the project staged towing contractor selected by ODOT.
  • ODOT will be towing all abandoned vehicles within the project boundaries using the staged towing contractor.
  • All tows taken by staged towing contractor will be at owners expense.

Overnight Extension of I-5 Southbound Closure to Marquam Bridge Nights of Sept 21-23

During these closures, crews will use an Under Bridge Inspection Truck to identify safety concerns and document the condition of the bridge's structural elements for maintenance needs.

Why Now?  By scheduling this work alongside I-5 southbound closures for the Rose Quarter project, ODOT is able to share resources, reduce cost, and avoid the separate closures that these inspections would otherwise require.
