PORTLAND – All lanes of Interstate 5 northbound and southbound in the Rose Quarter will close overnight for up to 14 hours July 11-12 to install a new overhead sign structure near the Oregon Convention Center.
The closure will begin at 10 p.m. Saturday and end by noon Sunday.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience, and we will reopen the interstate just as soon as the work is complete,” said David Kim, ODOT’s statewide project delivery manager. “Plan ahead for your Sunday morning as travel may be affected in many areas of the city.”
Expect delays in the Rose Quarter and on nearby alternate routes during the closure. Plan ahead and allow extra time for your trip.
Needed work
During the closure, crews will remove an existing sign structure and install a new sign structure over I-5 near the Oregon Convention Center and just south of the Moda Center. This work is part of planned improvements to I-5 and will support a future extended merging lane. As we change the lane configuration, signs need to line up with the new lane lines. The new signs on the structure will be larger with refreshed reflector lettering, improving visibility and safety. Crews have been visible for weeks in the work area installing the supports.
Additionally, crews will complete preparations during this closure for the upcoming work to repair the driving surface and complete structural repairs of I-5 southbound. Final inspections will be conducted to identify the extent of repairs required during the upcoming fall closure, which will last up to five weeks. Learn more about the fall closure here.
Drivers can expect:
- Temporary signs to alert drivers to the closure.
- I-5 southbound closed beginning at Exit 302B to I-405 (Fremont Bridge).
- I-5 northbound closed beginning at Exit 300 to I-84.
- The ramp to I-84 eastbound from I-5 northbound will stay open.
- The ramp from Broadway to I-5 northbound will stay open. All lanes of I-5 northbound will be open beyond this point.
- Drivers on I-84 westbound will be directed to I-5 southbound. All southbound lanes of I-5 will remain open beyond that point.
Options to avoid or navigate the closure:
- Use the signed detour at I-405 for local travel northbound or southbound.
- Use I-205 for regional travel.
- Plan your trip ahead of time and access travel navigation tools like ODOT’s TripCheck or other online mapping tools.

About the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project
The I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project is improving safety and congestion where I-5, I-84, and I-405 converge, while strengthening local connections and supporting long-term community revitalization in the Albina neighborhood. Construction currently underway increases seismic resilience, improves safety with the extension of a merging lane, replaces the concrete deck of an elevated structure and prepares the project area for future improvements.
