Sign bridge installation this summer means I-5 closure of all lanes

14-hour closure of all lanes of I-5 for sign bridge installation this summer

Expect an overnight closure of I-5 on all lanes for sign bridge installation this July, with the exact date to be announced soon. All lanes will be closed in both directions for up to 14 hours one weekend, from 10 p.m. on Saturday to noon on Sunday in the Rose Quarter. During this time, construction crews will be replacing the existing sign structure, or “sign bridge,” near the Oregon Convention Center. The sign bridge will support new traffic patterns as the project moves forward.

What to expect while traveling:
Travelers will be detoured to I-405 for travel in both directions. Regional traffic is encouraged to use I-205 as an alternate route.

What you can do:

  • Plan ahead and take advantage of navigation tools (e.g. TripCheck).
  • Consider your flexibility to avoid traveling or making appointments during the closure time, e.g. Sunday morning.
  • Choose an alternate travel mode through the area like TriMet, Portland Streetcar, or carpool.
  • Plan for your trip to take extra time.

I-5 southbound closure for up to five weeks this fall

Structural repairs are needed on an elevated section of I-5 just south of the Moda Center. This structure has developed ruts, cracks, and potholes due to over four decades of heavy use and weather. That’s right, it’s been forty years since the concrete was last replaced.

To complete these critical repairs and improve safety of the road, all southbound lanes of I-5 in the Rose Quarter will be closed around the clock for up to five weeks starting in September. The five-week closure is the safest, fastest, and most cost-effective way to get the work done, compared to weekend or single-lane closures. There will be impacts to travel times and reliability, so you’ll want to plan ahead.

Visit our Construction Travel Impacts page to learn more about major upcoming closures, how they may impact your travel and what steps you can take to make them easier for yourself and your neighbors.

Sneak a peek at Rose Quarter construction

Rose Quarter construction is so much more than the hard hats, safety vests and heavy tools you see while driving by. Take a look at some behind the scenes footage of our crews making repairs on I-5 during the closures.
